Grand Rapids Specialty Dental Services

In addition to the numerous dental treatments and procedures we offer our West Michigan patients in preventative, cosmetic and restorative dentistry, Great Lakes Dental Care also diagnoses and treats a variety of specialty dental issues.

Specialty dentistry goes beyond common dental procedures to help patients eliminate issues of dental pain and discomfort or cosmetic issues resulting from TMJ, wisdom teeth, misaligned or crooked teeth or an aversion to non-sedative anesthesia. Using many of today’s advanced dental procedures, including oral surgery, the knowledgeable dental professionals at Great Lakes Dental Care will work with you to determine whether a specialty dental treatment is best for you.

Braces – Orthodontics

Orthodontics, which most of us know as braces, describes the art of using appliances to straighten and align teeth. At Great Lakes Dental Care, our professional dentists most commonly use braces to move teeth into their proper positioning. Our Grand Rapids dentists will bond brackets to your teeth and arch wires are threaded through the brackets. The arch wires act as a track, guiding each tooth to its proper position.

There are several types of orthodontic braces available to our Grand Rapids dental patients, including traditional metal braces, ceramic ‘tooth-colored’ braces and clear aligners.

TMJ Treatment

Great Lakes Dental Care can provide advice and treatment for patients who show symptoms for TMJ, which stands for temporal-mandibular joint. Temporal, as in temple area of skull; mandibular as in mandible, or lower jaw; and joint as in it’s where the head and jaw meet.

Problems with this joint may be caused by a misalignment of the teeth, oral trauma or excess muscle tension. Cartilage buffers the two bones that meet there and five muscles are also related to this area of the mouth. If something goes wrong a good deal of trouble can result.

Sedation Dentistry

We are happy to offer a number of solutions for patients to make your dental visit as comfortable as possible. Sedation dentistry techniques enable patients who might otherwise avoid the dentist to receive dental treatment necessary for a healthy smile.

Dental sedation is a safe and effective technique that can be used on a patient who suffers from dental anxiety or dental phobia.

Oral Surgery

As a comprehensive and full-service dental practice, Great Lakes Dental Care aims to minimize the stress, fear and uncertainty that surrounds surgical procedures by performing oral surgery right in our Grand Rapids dental office.

Oral surgery focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and defects of the mouth and dental structures. Oral surgery can apply to any treatment or procedure performed in the mouth that involves our Grand Rapids dentists repairing, extracting, re-aligning, removing, implanting, restoring or reducing pain resulting from issues with the teeth, gums, mouth or jaw.

Wisdom Teeth

While wisdom teeth can be a valuable asset to your mouth when they are healthy and properly positioned, problems may develop that require their removal. Our professional and knowledgeable dental professionals will work with you to determine the best course of action for your specific situation.
